Uttarakhand rains: Nearly 200 roads, including Gangotri highway, blocked

DEHRADUN: Incessant rains and related events have blocked nearly 200 roads, including national and state highways, in Uttarakhand. The Gangotri national highway, which suffered damage due to a landslide on Thursday, continued to remain blocked at Bandarkot in Uttarkashi throughout the day. According to the Uttarakhand emergency operation centre, the state government has pressed into service 298 earthmoving machines to open the blocked roads -- including 94 PWD-controlled roads and 103 Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana roads -- for vehicular movements.

Chamoli has been the worst-hit with 49 blocked roads, followed by 30 roads in Dehradun, 22 in Pauri Garhwal, 20 in Pithoragarh, 18 in Rudraprayag and 13 in Bageshwar. Meanwhile, a spell of heavy rain damaged a stretch of NH-707A on Tehri bypass road near Mussoorie on Friday, posing a risk to motorists. As a precautionary measure, the movement of heavy vehicles was stopped on the route. An embankment on the side of the road collapsed due to the downpour. To prevent any untoward incident, we have stopped the movement of heavy vehicles on the road, said Bhopal Singh Chauhan, nayab tehsildar, Mussoorie. Due to the collapse of the embankment, nearly half of the road has sunk and become very dangerous for vehicles. We urge the authorities to repair it soon, said Virendra Singh, a resident. Khuswant Sharma, junior engineer of NH said that repair work on the road will be initiated and the traffic will resume soon. The south-west monsoon remained active over Uttarakhand with moderate rain spells witnessed across the hill state on Friday. Dehradun also recorded a heavy rain spell during evening hours. The Met centre has issued an alert and predicted heavy-to-very-heavy rain spells in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Champawat, Nainital, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts during the next 48 hours.
