Noidas skyline to be transformed by facade lighting

The Noida Authority has made it compulsory for buildings along the Noida Expressway to use facade lighting. A change in building bylaws has been made, stipulating that 40 percent of the front of a highway facing buildings should be lit up by facade lights. The objective of the exercise is to create a panoramic night view of Noida city on par with other bustling international cities like Dubai, Singapore and New York.

Noida will soon have contemporary facade lighting along the lines of major international cities. The Noida Authority has drawn up plans to light up the skyline of the city along the Noida Greater Noida Expressway. The idea has been mooted to create a beautiful evening panorama of the city and showcase the exteriors of the buildings along the Expressway. Necessary changes to the building bylaws have been made, and new rules have been drafted to mandate exterior lighting for buildings along this route.

What is facade lighting?
Facade lighting is a technique and design form of lighting which highlights the exterior outlines of a building or a structure. Its primary role is to emphasise the buildings front elevation and special features.

New rules for facade lighting along Noida Greater Noida Expressway
The Noida Authority has changed the bylaws of the building code to make it compulsory to install facade lighting in buildings alongside both sides of the Noida Greater Noida Expressway. As per the recent revisions to the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act, a building owner will have to install facade lights on at least 40 percent of the front exterior. The new rules allow the developer to choose the design, colour or type of facade lighting. They can even use the modern laser beams for the lighting design.

If the Authority issues a notice over the issue, the allottee will have to file a response within two months. If the allottee does not start the work on the lighting project within two months of the notice, officials will take necessary action against the leaseholder.

For future projects, occupancy certificates will only be issued after necessary compliance with the new lighting rule. Even the scrutiny of maps of new buildings, which require approval of the Authority, will have to meet the criteria of new regulations.

Why has Noida Greater Noida Expressway been chosen for this project?
The 25 km long Noida Expressway is one of the iconic and busy routes of Noida city. It connects Noida to the upcoming areas of Greater Noida. It is home to a large number of high rises. Several residential, commercial and institutional buildings are still in development stages, and many more are expected to be built in future. Looking at the current and future prospects of this important connectivity link and housing belt, its been picked up for the facade lighting project.

Facade lighting has helped illuminate night time skylines of several big cities like New York, Singapore and Dubai. It is popular as it puts the spotlight on the citys architecture and livens up the surroundings of a place.

The Noida Master Plan 2031 permits institutional, commercial and residential development along either side of the Noida Greater Noida Expressway. Work on a number of the multistory buildings is in progress with new developments in the pipeline as well. The new rules could provide an aesthetic and modern look to the skyline of Noida.
