MCD Started Survey to Identify Dangerous Buildings to Prepare for Monsoon

The Delhi Municipal Corporation has commenced a survey of dangerous structures in the city in preparation for the approaching monsoon season. Out of the approximately 500,000 properties examined thus far, six have been designated as being in a dangerous condition, while 81 others require immediate repairs.

Between May 5 and 11, six buildings were identified as hazardous. These comprised two in the western zone, one in the southern Shahdara area, one in the northern Shahdara area, and two in Civil Lines. Additionally, 81 residences and buildings were found to be in need of repairs. The owners of all the identified properties were notified and urged to take necessary measures to prevent action by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). As of May 11, 18 owners have already undertaken repairs on their properties, according to an MCD official.

Until May 4, MCD personnel had conducted 479,499 on site visits, as stated by the official. The survey encompasses all 12 zones of the MCD and will continue until the end of June.

Comparatively, by mid-June last year, the MCD had only discovered 40 dangerous buildings and 564 structures requiring repairs. An official expressed the need to complete this years survey by June 30 to enable appropriate action such as demolition, securing, or repairing the identified buildings.

In response to building collapses in Delhi, the MCD issued a circular last month, requesting area wise reports every Friday from zonal superintending engineers. The circular also outlined guidelines for surveying all municipal schools, dispensaries, offices, and hospitals before the onset of the monsoon and prioritizing their repairs.
