Gurugrams Dwarka Expressway Set to Complete by June, Providing Seamless Commuting

The NHAI took over the highway project in 2018, and construction began in 2019. According to Nirman Jambulkar, the project director for NHAI, the work on the project is in its final stages, and it will be completed by the end of June.

According to officials from the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India), the work on the Gurugram sections of the Dwarka Expressway will be finished by the end of June. The cloverleaf close to the Kherki Daula toll plaza, a crucial structure linking the Dwarka Expressway to the Delhi Jaipur highway and the Southern Peripheral Road, is now complete and undergoing load testing. Once completed, the 29 km long Dwarka Expressway will enable commuters to travel seamlessly within the city and between Gurugram and Delhi, as well as provide access to the Delhi Mumbai Expressway via Badshahpur.

The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, will connect Shiv Murti on the Delhi Jaipur highway close to Mahipalpur with Kherki Daula after passing through several residential sectors of Gurugram. The NHAI took over the highway project in 2018, and construction began in 2019. According to Nirman Jambulkar, the project director for NHAI, the work on the project is in its final stages, and it will be completed by the end of June.

Package three of the Dwarka Expressway begins at Bajghera on the Delhi Haryana border and ends near the Basai railway overbridge, covering a distance of 10.2 km primarily through sectors 113, 112, 111, 110, 109, 106, 105, 104, 103, and 102 in Gurugram. Package four is 8.77 km in length and starts from the Basai rail overbridge, ending at the Delhi Jaipur highway near Kherki Daula. It includes the cloverleaf, which connects the expressway to the Delhi Jaipur highway and the Southern Peripheral Road.

The work on packages three and four is nearing completion, with package four being 99% complete and package three being 95% complete, according to a senior official from L&T, the highway contractor for both packages. The trumpet tower, which connects the road to Manesar, is ready, and the Bajghera underpass has been opened for traffic trials. NHAI officials also stated that a crucial vehicle underpass in package four, just ahead of Pataudi crossing, will be opened to traffic in the next 15 days, nearly concluding work on this stretch.

Lastly, the work on packages one and two of the expressway, which is in Delhi, is anticipated to be finished by the end of December, according to the highway contractor.

The contractor for packages one and two of the Dwarka Expressway, J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, announced that they have completed almost 90% of the work on package two and about 65% of the work on package one. The company is confident that the project will be completed by the end of the year. However, a senior official of J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd noted that the construction work for package one is challenging due to the need to shift utilities and the high volume of traffic, which is impacting the pace of work. As a result, package one may only be ready by April 2024.

Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari visited the Urban Extension Road2 last month and is expected to review the work on the expressway in May. However, the NHAI officials said they have not received any directives regarding his visit. There is speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate the expressway once it is ready by June, but NHAI officials stated that they were not aware of any such proposal.

Gurugram MP and Union minister of state Rao Inderjit Singh, who is actively involved in the project, met with Gadkari last week and was informed that the transport minister will inspect the highway and the cloverleaf in May. Singh welcomed Gadkari and Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the project.

A civic activist, Prakhar Sahay, who has been following the construction of the road, said that while most of the work is complete on packages one and two, the authority needs to expedite the shifting of power lines near Pataudi crossing and push the work on the railway overbridge. He believes that the road will reduce congestion and improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram.

The Dwarka Expressway project was initiated by the Haryana government in 2006 but faced setbacks due to land acquisition issues and legal tangles. The NHAI took over the project and commenced work after the in principle declaration of the expressway as a national highway in 2016.
