Government hands over 3,000 EWS flats to slum dwellers in Delhi

Under the Central Governments housing scheme, Housing for All, the Prime Minister has inaugurated new flats for slum dwellers of Bhoomiheen Camp. Over 3,000 beneficiaries were handed newly constructed EWS homes. This project was a part of an In Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project at Kalkaji Extension in the National Capital. It aims to provide better living conditions to people living in slums with developed civic amenities and clear ownership of their homes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, handed over newly built homes to as many as 3,084 slum dwellers at Kalkaji. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is working towards in situ slum rehabilitations across Delhi. The main objective of the exercise is to provide proper housing to slum dwellers with developed infrastructure in place.

What did the PM say on the occasion?
Prime Minister Nardendra Modi, said Today is a big day for thousands of slum dwellers. A new beginning to life. As I handed over the keys to eligible beneficiaries, I could see their happy and joyous faces. Over 3,000 houses have been constructed in the first phase of the Kalkaji Extension.

The Kalkaji Extension Project
The Kalkaji Extension Project encompasses rehabilitation of three slums, Jawahar camp, Navjeevan camp and Bhoomiheen camp all located within Kalkaji area. The project is being taken up in phases, with 3,024 flats built under Phase 1. Residents will now vacate the Jhuggi Jhopris at Bhoomiheen camp as they shift to their new homes. This land will be used to build homes for those living at Jawahar and Navjeevan camps.

The new flats have modern fittings with ceramic tiles and public amenities. The Phase 1 of the project has been completed at a cost of Rs 345 crore. With new homes, the slum residents will get secured ownership and title of the property.
