Dwarka Expressway, New Gurgaon - First Urban Elevated Highway of India

Dwarka Expressway's Gurgaon Section to be Completed by October 15

September 25, 2023: Dwarka Expressway has missed several deadlines and is now making significant progress. As per NHAI officials, the 18.9 km stretch of the expressway in Gurgaon is expected to be finished by October 15.

Currently, landscaping work at all five roundabouts on the Gurgaon section of the Dwarka Expressway is underway.

According to an NHAI official, a safety audit of the expressway has been conducted, and necessary interventions have been made based on its recommendations. These include:

installing more crash barriers
changing their alignment
merging slip roads with the main carriageway
Once the work is completed, another safety audit will be conducted to ensure safe commuting.

The 29 km Dwarka Expressway runs from Shiv Murti in Delhi to Gurgaon's Kherki Daula toll plaza. The underpass at Kherki Majra will take another six months to complete, while an underpass near Bajghera will also take time to build due to pending land acquisition.

However, NHAI officials have stated that both structures will not delay the expressway's opening.
Dwarka Expressway is the third direct connecting route between Delhi and Gurgaon, after NH-8 and Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road. The expressway will be a 16-lane access-controlled highway running between Shiv Murti in Delhi and Kherki Daula in Gurugram. The 18.9 km-section of the expressway will be in Gurugram, and the remaining 10.1 km in Delhi.

The expressway will be a remarkable example of modern engineering brilliance, with an 8-lane grade-separated route, three-lane service roads, many crossroad underpasses at key intersection points, and multi-level interchanges.

Additionally, the Dwarka Expressway New Gurgaon will provide direct access to the upcoming India International Convention Centre (IICC) in Sector 25 of Dwarka. It will also provide an alternative route to IGI Airport through a 8-lane shallow tunnel. The strategic location of the expressway ensures superb connectivity to the railway station, Bijwasan, NH-8 and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR).

In addition, the Haryana Roadways announced plans to build a new interstate bus station close to the highway, promoting further growth and trade. Furthermore, there is a plan to improve the area's green cover. This will include creating two urban forests using the Japanese Miyawaki technique along the expressway. There will be an abundance of greenery, with plantations that are 30 times denser and 10 times taller than typical woodlands.
